Worm Farm Benefits by M.L. Petersen whose blog can be found here: http://wormstotherescue.blogspot.com/

The biggest benefit of a worm farm however large or small, is the worm castings, or Vermicompost. Vermicompost is an excellent fertilizer for plants and gardens, and it really has no equal. It has almost no scent as most animal manures do. All plants benefit from vermicompost.

The benefits of a worm farm aren’t just about the plants. While increasing the quality and quantity of plants is the main benefit, the farms are also a great way to save money and improve the environment. Vermicompost is actually a better fertilizer that the commercial chemical fertilizers and it is environmentally friendly as there is no chemicals to leach out and contaminate our water supplies. Plants more readily accept the nutrients from worm compost than commercial fertilizers.

An important aspects of any composting system is in the amount of garbage that it reduces. Kitchen scraps and other organic waists are a large portion of a families garbage output. It is estimated that millions of tons of food is thrown away every year. With a worm farm,a large part of that waste could be recycled into environmentally friendly compost and greatly benefit our plants and gardens.

Your worm farm should have very little or no smell. If you have a rotten food or ammonia smell you may need to provide more oxygen. You may have to reduce the amount food for awhile. You may also need to clean out the bin and start with fresh material. Also consider the amount of moisture in the bin. To much moisture will slow down the food consumption and may even kill the worms. Moisture meters are available to help control the amount of moisture in a bin.

Feeding the worms meat scraps can also cause the bin to smell. Worm scraps also invite unwanted insects and animals to the bin.

In the Southern United States fire ants can be a problem. The best control is to use measures as necessary to prevent their entry. That is find their entry point and block it.

The whole purpose of your worm farm is to get vermicompost, that rich fertilizer, the “black gold” of gardening. A small amount of vermicompost in one planting hole makes big difference in plant health. Mix it with soil for your house plants and use in your garden a couple of times a year. You will see a burst of growth. It seems to do best when placed near the roots.

In many areas of the country compost tea is popular. The tea is used as a foliage spray for foliage feeding and since it is rich in beneficial bacteria it is also used as an environmentally acceptable pesticide and fungicide.

Compost tea is made by placing an amount of vermicompost in a container of water and bubbling air through the mixture for about two weeks. An air source can be an inexpensive fish tank aerator. The ratio of compost to water is about 4 to 1. Stir the container once a day. If this is to be sprayed, filter the tea first using a fine sieve or cheese cloth.

The LiveSmartVideos crew was excited to find this bamboo spoon in a take-out eatery near Brisbane, Australia.

It seems some creative person may well have come up with a better alternative than the plastic utensils which take forever to break down in our landfills and oceans.

We're looking forward to the day when all bamboo is sustainably harvested and processed without using chemicals.

The post Green Solutions for Food Service: Biodegradable Disposable Plates, Bowls and Lunch Trays appeared first on Live Smart Videos & Green Living Series.

These days, people everywhere are becoming eco-friendly, especially when it comes to take-out containers and eating out. Styrofoam clamshells became very popular in the 1950′s, but are now being outlawed by cities across the country. We are finally waking up to the fact that maybe Styrofoam isn’t as great as we once thought and we need to make a mindful choice to change.

Everyone is becoming more green these days, especially in terms of eating out and the take home food containers filling their doggie bags. Now that Styrofoam clamshells, which were the marvel of the 1950′s plastics boom being outlawed by cities across the country, we’re finally realizing that maybe the once-marvel isn’t as great as we thought it to be- and that maybe it is time to make a real change.

Many more eco-friendly options are now becoming more available every day in the food service industry which is great for business – and great for the planet. One of the principal materials being used today in place of Styrofoam for disposable tableware is bagasse( a byproduct of the sugarcane refining process). In layman’s terms, bagasse is what is left over after the sugarcane stalks are crushed to extract the juices. Since bagasse comes from the earth it is easily converted by nature into simple, stable compounds that are absorbed back into the ecosystem.

There are many attractive qualities of bagasse, one of many being that it is both biodegradable and compostable. This means that you don’t have to worry that your great-great grandchildren will be dealing with your take home food container from Saturday night’s dinner!

Biodegradable means that the product will break down into water, carbon dioxide, and biomass in a short amount of time. When something is “compostable”, it means that it is made of organic matter that will break down in a compost system or land fill.

Bagasse biodegradable food containers are quickly being recognized as a great eco-friendly alternative to traditional Styrofoam clamshells and plastic plates. Bagasse biodegradable food containers can be lined with a corn-starch based film called PLA (polylactic acid). PLA lining is a clear, thin sheet that acts as a complete moisture and grease barrier, protecting the container and allowing it to stand up against any and all types of food.

Here are some green facts regarding disposable tableware: – While recycling of Styrofoam is possible, it is extremely expensive and many recycling plants do not accept it. Styrofoam cannot be recycled to make new Styrofoam products. It can only be used to make other products such as packing filler. – Styrofoam does not break down easily and some studies indicate that it may release chemicals when it gets wet, contaminating our precious water sources. It takes up much more space than paper in our landfills. – Less water and energy is required to produce Bagasse than Styrofoam, paper, and recycled paper. – Trees can take up to 30 years to mature, while sugarcane only takes one year making it a very renewable resource. – Less CO2 is emitted by creating Bagasse over Styrofoam and paper. – Americans use and discard over 2.5 billion Styrofoam cups each year. Thinking green and moving towards the use of more sustainable resources is imperative. Going green when you eat out or order take home food is now easier than ever.

For your barbeques and gatherings it is now possible to buy eco-friendly, compostable, and organic disposable tableware including cups, plates, bowls, and cutlery made from the renewable resource bagasse.

There has never been a better time to go green ‘ particularly when you eat! It’s your earth – it’s worth it!
